Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Will Mark a New Era for the Series, Developers Explain Its Concept
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will reimagine the series’ first game for longtime Lara Croft fans and newcomers, marking the start of a new phase for the franchise.
Crystal Dynamics plans to update the original game’s graphics and gameplay mechanics. In an interview, Director of Game Experience Jeff Adams explained how the team plans to bring together fans of the classic games, the Survivor trilogy, and those just discovering the series.
We’re grateful to all our fans, no matter where you joined us in Tomb Raider’s history or when you discovered the franchise. If you’ve been with us since 1996, we’re glad you’re still here. If you first became interested in Tomb Raider through the Netflix animated series, welcome.
Adams said the game will retain key elements of the original, including dangerous locations, challenging puzzles, battles with predators, and cinematic moments. It will also introduce modern progression systems that let players improve Lara’s attributes and craft useful upgrades. Healing will fit into the adventure’s setting, too: instead of finding medkits, Lara will be able to craft healing items herself.

This game isn’t just for fans. It’s not a remaster or simply a new coat of paint. We’re introducing it to all players because it’s an important part of Lara’s history and the first step in the next major phase of Tomb Raider.
