PHYSINT Star Impressed by Kojima’s Goal to Blur the Line Between Movies and Games
Bill Skarsgård says Hideo Kojima is developing a new creative language for PHYSINT, rather than simply blending film and games.
Kojima wants to create an entirely new format for interactive entertainment. According to Skarsgård, his next game, PHYSINT, will combine cinematic storytelling, photorealistic graphics, and a whole universe to explore.
Skarsgård, known for playing Pennywise in the It films and for his role in Dune, discussed working with Kojima on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor said he has been a fan of the Japanese game designer since childhood, has played every Metal Gear Solid game available to him, and has long admired the worlds Kojima creates. Skarsgård especially values Kojima’s ability to sustain an atmosphere of mystery and build expansive universes.
In Skarsgård’s view, Kojima understands the language of cinema very well, even though he remains a video game creator. Skarsgård once asked whether Kojima would want to direct a Metal Gear Solid movie himself and received a no.
He’s an auteur, but an auteur of video games. He understands films and cinema very well. At this stage, he’s simply inventing a new medium of expression.
Skarsgård also said the team is preparing about eight hours of story content, which will be only one part of PHYSINT’s expansive universe.
