Hogwarts Legacy 2 Officially Confirmed

Hogwarts Legacy, the Harry Potter prequel adventure, was 2022’s biggest new game release. It sold more than 22 million copies in the U.S. during its first year, surpassing that year’s Call of Duty release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Sales have since topped 40 million worldwide, making a sequel seem inevitable. Warner Bros. Discovery has now confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development.

The announcement comes as little surprise. Warner Bros. executives have long described a follow-up to the billion-dollar hit as a priority, especially as the company’s games division has faced setbacks, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s poor performance, difficulties with MultiVersus and the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game. The company has also said it plans to concentrate on four major franchises, with Harry Potter among them.

In an Aug. 6 letter to shareholders, Warner Bros. described games as an “important growth lever” and pointed to several recent releases. The letter also confirmed that a second Hogwarts Legacy game is in development.

During the second quarter, we released Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight—the highest-rated Lego game ever—and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, our second mobile game from the Game of Thrones universe. These releases marked the first launches under our refocused strategy, which centers on four key franchises worth more than $1 billion each and prioritizes disciplined investment in fewer, higher-confidence titles. We expect Games to contribute more meaningfully to segment profitability as our pipeline grows, including with the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.

Fans had already heard signs that another game was planned. In 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels called a successor to Hogwarts Legacy “one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.”

Why Hogwarts Legacy 2 matters to WB Games

In 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming and games chief JB Perrette said that, following a disappointing year for the games division, the company would focus on four franchises: Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC. For DC, he said, the emphasis would be on Batman, while leaving room for selected projects as the new DC Universe develops. The company has continued to follow that plan.

The sequel may also connect with the upcoming Harry Potter HBO series. In 2024, then-Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad told Variety that the game team was coordinating some of the sequel’s larger story elements with the series.

With the original game approaching its fourth anniversary, a return to the Wizarding World feels timely. Gamescom Opening Night Live in August and The Game Awards in December could provide opportunities for a first look. A release in 2027 or 2028 would not be surprising.
