Working on the iconic anime gave Nathan Johnson extra credibility with kids.

Texas state senator Nathan Johnson recently won the election for attorney general and decided to share an unexpected part of his biography. Long before his political career, he worked on music for Dragon Ball Z: He wrote the soundtrack for the first 67 episodes of the anime in Funimation’s Ultimate Uncut Special Edition, as well as for five feature films in the franchise.

“If you grew up on Dragon Ball Z, you may know me better than you think. I wrote music for 67 episodes and five movies, and I had a great time doing it.”

According to Variety, Johnson worked on the English-language versions of The World’s Strongest, The Tree of Might, Broly: Second Coming, Fusion Reborn, and Wrath of the Dragon. For the last film, he even had to learn a new instrument. To write the theme for Tapion, who plays the ocarina, Johnson bought one and tried to learn how to play it.

Johnson said Dragon Ball Z gave him special standing with kids and their friends:

“My son was one at the time. I remember him sitting on my lap, something exploding on the screen, and he was like, ‘Oh, Dad, Goku!’ He loved it. For me, it was a chance to be creative and become part of a culture that few people get the chance to connect with so closely.”
