Anya Taylor-Joy’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie Sets Netflix Streaming Home
Anya Taylor-Joy captivated audiences as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in Netflix’s 2020 miniseries The Queen’s Gambit. Her poised yet emotionally rich performance made Beth memorable long after the series ended, outshining even Taylor-Joy’s appearances in action franchises such as Fox’s Marvel film The New Mutants for some viewers.
Taylor-Joy has also won over families with a very different role: Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The sci-fi adventure showcased her comedic side and became the second-highest-grossing animated film of 2026. It arrives on Netflix on Nov. 30.
What is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie about?

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the creative team behind Teen Titans Go!, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an action comedy based on Nintendo’s Mario video game franchise, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. Illumination and Nintendo produced the film.
The sequel to the 2023 film picks up after Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) first arrive in the Mushroom Kingdom. After defeating Bowser (Jack Black), the brothers have shrunk him and are trying to rehabilitate him. Mario and Luigi are enjoying life as the Mushroom Kingdom’s saviors when they learn that Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) has been kidnapped by Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie).
Bowser Jr. is still angry that Mario and Luigi defeated his father and shrank him, leaving him to run around in a cage. He has taken Rosalina far beyond a nearby castle, to a vast, nearly empty region of the universe known as space.
The brothers have luck on their side, along with a new ally: Yoshi, voiced by Donald Glover. Together, they set out to rescue Rosalina.

Was The Super Mario Galaxy Movie successful?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has performed well commercially. In June, it passed $1 billion at the global box office. It did not match the success of its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but still crossed the billion-dollar mark.

Critics were less taken with Illumination’s second film in the Mario universe. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave it one out of five stars, calling it a “bland screensaver of a movie that’s actually worse than AI.” Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent rated it two out of five, describing it as “a joke-free sequel that doubles down on its own blandness.”
Polygon’s review was more positive. Reviewer Michael McWhertor praised the film for taking “some welcome swings at diverse animation styles.”
Viewers looking for emotional or mature depth may not find it in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Will there be a sequel to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
The film’s commercial success and Nintendo’s 45 years of Mario content give the company plenty to draw on for another movie, though no sequel is confirmed here.
The post-credit scene introduces another beloved Nintendo character, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie did. The article suggests Nintendo may continue the story, but does not confirm a follow-up.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is streaming on Peacock and arrives on Netflix on Nov. 30.
