Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Faces Backlash and Negative Reviews Over AI Slop but Tops Steam Sales
Players who pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 have gained access to the shooter’s beta test, sending the title up the Steam sales charts despite a wave of early criticism. The beta gives players access to a slice of the campaign along with several multiplayer modes.
A user going by the handle DANNYonPC highlighted an image appearing on an in-game truck, claiming the developers are “using AI-generated content again.”
The development team previously confirmed the use of AI tools on the game’s official Steam page:
Our team uses generative AI tools to develop some in-game assets.

User feedback for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta currently sits at “Mostly Negative” with a 38% approval rating. Players report performance issues, complain about the TMP 2.0 requirement, and note that the overall gameplay feels too fast.
However, the negative reviews and debates over generative AI did not stop the shooter from surging into Steam’s top sellers over the weekend.
The current top-sellers list, ranked by gross revenue, includes the following titles (weekly totals may fluctuate):
- How to Fish
- Counter-Strike 2
- WARDOGS
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
- Steam Machine
- Mortal Shell II
- Dota 2
- Apex Legends
- HELLDIVERS 2
- Big Walk

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026.
