GTA 6 Leaks Disappoint Some Players, Who Recall Gabe Newell’s Remarks on Realism in Games
Leaked gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto VI has sparked concerns among players that realistic mechanics could turn into a chore.
In August, a hacker going by Cyberleek posted several gameplay clips of Grand Theft Auto VI. Players analyzing the footage have noticed details that have received a mixed reception.
The videos indicate that Rockstar Games expanded vehicle-related systems. Unless cut before launch, the release build may include a realistic refueling mechanic that requires players to gas up their vehicles.
The potential feature has divided the community. While some welcome immersive details, critical players worry that managing fuel levels will quickly become frustrating.
The debate prompted fans to revisit comments from Valve head Gabe Newell. In the 2023 documentary Half-Life: 25th Anniversary Documentary, Newell shared his perspective on realism in video games:
In design discussions, people would say, “That’s not realistic.” And you’re like, “Okay, but what does that have to do with… Explain to me why that’s fun.” Because in real life, I have to make shopping lists for the grocery store. I never thought realism was fun. I play games to have fun.
Valve developers ultimately felt the need to establish their own definition of fun, Newell explained:
We recognized that it wasn’t universal, so we described it this way: “It’s the degree to which a game recognizes and responds to the player’s choices and actions.” From a behavioral science standpoint, we were talking about what reinforcements we were using and what reinforcement schedules we were using.
That perspective remains relevant across modern game design. Mundane routines can weigh down gameplay, and prioritizing strict realism over player enjoyment risks turning mechanics into active annoyances.

Rockstar Games is scheduled to host an official presentation for GTA VI on August 27, premiering first on Netflix.
The official release of Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have not yet announced a release date or launch window for the PC edition.
