Sony Reminds PlayStation Owners They Buy Licenses, Not Digital Games
A recent email notice from Sony has renewed debate over the difference between purchasing physical media and digital games.
The Verge journalist Tom Warren highlighted the notification sent out to PlayStation users. The email informs players that they have accepted several licensing agreements, including the Terms of Service, Code of Conduct, End User License Agreement, and Privacy Policy.
Particular attention centered on section “1.4 License to you,” in which Sony clarifies that buying a digital copy does not grant ownership of the game. Instead, the user receives a license to use it.
Under these terms, “Software” includes games, downloadable content, and related digital items:
Software is licensed to you, not sold. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, personal license to run or use the Software for personal, non-commercial use on the system or device for which it is intended. This license is only valid as of the specified release date of the Software, the start date of early access, or the beta release date. All rights in the Software not expressly granted to you under this license are reserved by us, including all intellectual property rights in the Software.
This is not a new provision, as similar language has long existed in PlayStation agreements.
The reminder comes after Sony announced plans this summer to move away from releasing PlayStation games on physical discs, a decision that drew criticism from some players online.
The email also arrived ahead of a boycott planned for late August. Some users plan to temporarily disconnect from PlayStation services to demonstrate ongoing consumer demand for physical game copies.
