The Cast of “The Odyssey” Gives a Rare Standing Ovation to One of Its Actresses

The latest issue of Empire magazine turns its spotlight to Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic, The Odyssey.

During an interview, producer Emma Thomas—Nolan’s long-time creative and life partner—recounted a rare moment of spontaneous applause on set. The recipient of this honor was Samantha Morton, who portrays the sorceress Circe.

According to Thomas, Morton’s performance was so profoundly moving that both the crew and her fellow actors felt compelled to break into applause. It was a singular moment, one that hadn’t occurred on a Nolan set since the filming of The Dark Knight, when Heath Ledger’s mesmerizing turn as the Joker similarly drew an ovation from those behind the scenes.

In Homer’s original epic, Circe serves as a brief but pivotal figure: an enchantress who reigns over the island of Aeaea and possesses the power to transform men into animals. True to the source material, the film depicts her transforming Odysseus’s (Matt Damon) crew into swine before eventually falling in love with the hero and enticing him to remain on her island.

Morton, a two-time Academy Award nominee, brings an impressive pedigree to the role, with notable credits including Minority Report, Morvern Callar, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as well as television performances in The Walking Dead (pictured left) and The Serpent Queen.

The Odyssey is slated for a global theatrical release on July 15. The star-studded ensemble also features Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and others.
