Ridley Scott is returning to expand his iconic Alien universe. Despite recent suggestions that he had exhausted his creative interest in the franchise, the visionary director has confirmed he is developing a direct sequel to 2017’s Alien: Covenant. The upcoming installment will center on the android David, with Michael Fassbender widely expected to reprise the role.

The narrative will pick up in the wake of Covenant’s cliffhanger, exploring David’s chilling ambitions. Scott intends to delve deeper into the character’s quest to forge a world of his own, furthering one of the franchise’s darkest thematic threads: the evolution of an artificial intelligence that has irrevocably severed ties with its creators.

Reports indicate that Fede Álvarez, the director behind Alien: Romulus, had originally considered incorporating David into his own narrative; however, insiders suggest the idea was vetoed by Scott. It is speculated that these creative disagreements regarding the character’s trajectory were a primary factor in Álvarez’s departure from that specific project.

David was first introduced in Prometheus before evolving into the primary antagonist of Alien: Covenant. By the conclusion of the latter, the android had seized control of a colony ship and secured a collection of xenomorph embryos, granting him the terrifying means to engineer his own twisted biological legacy.
