Take-Two Chief Explains Why AI Won’t Replace Creativity

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on artificial intelligence, calling it “a big thing” while also describing it as somewhat “a spectacle for the public.” He said AI is useful, but it cannot manufacture hits out of thin air.

Zelnick spoke at the Paley International Media Summit in Silicon Valley, emphasizing that AI should be regarded as a tool rather than a magic wand. He argued it’s less like an artist’s brush and more like the easel—or even the chair—the artist uses.

“Artificial intelligence is essentially the fusion of massive datasets with extensive computation within a natural LLM—a large language model. And what is a dataset, by definition? A view of the past. What is creativity, by definition? A view toward the future. So insofar as AI appears forward-looking, what is it? A predictive model.”

He stressed that even generative systems such as Microsoft MUSE won’t independently produce masterpieces. “AI is an important development. It matters to every industry. Will it churn out hits? No. It’s fundamentally datasets plus heavy computation with an attached language model.”

In his view, these are digital tools the industry has long employed, and their creative capabilities should not be overstated.
