Modder Working on Native PlayStation 5 Game Porting for Windows and Linux PC

PlayStation 5 emulators are not the only projects in development, as work is also underway on an alternative solution for playing console games on PC.

This summer, Sony announced it was phasing out physical discs for PlayStation games. This gave a new push not only to the development of various PlayStation 5 console emulators, but also to another direction: the native execution of console games on PC.

Recently, a tech enthusiast known as boykopovar discussed the “AnyPS5” project. It aims to execute PlayStation 5 binary files on the Linux and Windows operating systems.

Traditional emulators require significant hardware resources to virtualize the console architecture, whereas the native execution solution proposed by boykopovar functions as an executable file converter and compatibility layer:

According to the design, the program takes original PlayStation 5 ELF files and then adapts them for modern PC architecture using a converter.

boykopovar has opened the “AnyPS5” repository on GitHub. In the description, he clarified that the project uses only the standard C++20 library and “performs a deterministic transformation of the executable binary file” (converting console data into native executable files). Work is also underway to create replacements for system dynamic PRX libraries. Currently, the tool is able to reach the main game rendering loop. However, execution still stops at the stage of the first draw call.

boykopovar noted that the first public builds will be presented only after the first successful full launch of at least one game.
