Famitsu Gives The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake 37 out of 40 in First Review

Famitsu awarded the Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time a score of 37 out of 40, praising its updated graphics, controls, and camera. The reviewers found the game too easy.

Famitsu’s four reviewers gave the game scores of 9, 9, 9, and 10. They praised the smooth camera, improved controls, gameplay dynamics, and reworked graphics. Their main criticism was that the game was relatively simple compared with modern titles, though players may sometimes be unsure where to go next.

The remake scored three points below the 1998 original, which became the first game in Famitsu history to receive a perfect 40 out of 40. Its score matched that of Ocarina of Time 3D, the Nintendo 3DS version released in 2011.

An NPR review appeared online two days before the embargo lifted. The article was removed, but its contents had already spread to other publications. The author called the remake “excellent and simplified,” praising its updated graphics, combat system, and controls for Link. The review also cited uneven pacing, Nabooru’s unusual new appearance, voiced scenes that interrupt exploration, and awkward target switching as shortcomings.

Nintendo also added an orchestral soundtrack, expanded dialogue, and microphone support for playing melodies. The game will be released on November 5 exclusively for Switch 2. The digital version costs $59.99, and the physical version costs $69.99.
