DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, known for his work on “Superman” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” ultimately asserted control over the final cut of the superhero film “Supergirl,” according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.
Gunn reportedly took issue with director Craig Gillespie’s (“Cruella”) original vision, which ran 11 minutes longer and dedicated significantly more screen time to the film’s antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills (portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts). Gillespie’s cut also featured a distinct narrative pacing and a unique soundtrack selection.
“They were creatively misaligned—that’s the most diplomatic way to put it,”
a source told THR. Following underwhelming feedback from test screenings, Gunn personally oversaw the re-editing process; however, audience reception remained largely unchanged despite his intervention. During this process, Gunn received assistance from screenwriters Ana Nogueira and Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight”).
“Supergirl” follows the journey of Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, played by Milly Alcock. The film struggled significantly at the box office, grossing only $81 million globally against a production budget of $170 million.
