It has been nearly a month since The Super Mario Galaxy Movie premiered in theaters on April 1. If you have been patiently waiting for the Nintendo adaptation to hit streaming platforms, you will be pleased to know that your wait is almost over.

Helmed by Teen Titans Go! directors Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, this film serves as a direct follow-up to the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie and draws inspiration from the iconic 2007 Nintendo classic. Picking up after the defeat of Bowser (Jack Black), the story finds Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) enjoying a peaceful life in the Mushroom Kingdom. This tranquility is shattered, however, when word arrives that Peach’s long-estranged sister, Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), has vanished—allegedly kidnapped by Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr. (also voiced by Black).

Driven by the need to rescue her sister, Peach embarks on an interstellar quest alongside Toad (Keegan-Michael Key). The group is eventually bolstered by the arrival of Mario, Luigi, and their newest companion, Yoshi (Donald Glover).

While the film enjoyed a strong theatrical debut, it has since faced stiff competition at the box office. According to industry tracker When to Stream, the movie is slated for a premium video-on-demand (PVOD) release on May 5. Though Forbes notes that this source is historically reliable, Universal Pictures has yet to provide an official confirmation, so treat this date as tentative.

A mid-May release is relatively swift, yet it aligns with Universal’s current strategy of keeping films in theaters for at least five weekends prior to digital distribution. Notably, this theatrical window is scheduled to expand to seven weeks starting in 2027.

Polygon’s Michael McWhertor praised the film as a “dazzling, candy-coated chaos.” If you’re eager to share this vibrant adventure with your family, you won’t have to wait much longer—the projected streaming date is just over a week away.
