George R.R. Martin Ruined the Season 3 Finale of House of the Dragon Two Years Ago

HBO has aired the season three finale of House of the Dragon, bringing renewed attention to a deleted blog post by author George R. R. Martin.

The season three finale of House of the Dragon brought back attention to a September 2024 post by George R. R. Martin titled “Beware the Butterflies.” The author deleted the post shortly after publishing it, but the full text survived in archives. Two years later, it turns out that Martin effectively spoiled the final scene of season three in advance.

The author’s primary complaint was the removal of Maelor, the youngest son of Aegon and Helaena. Showrunner Ryan Condal initially explained the cut by citing the costs and production difficulties of working with a small child, but he intended to introduce the character later. Martin subsequently learned that the creative team decided to cut Maelor from the series entirely.

According to the author, this change triggered a butterfly effect. Without Maelor, the series lost several events tied to him, including a key circumstance that determined Helaena’s ultimate fate.

In the book, the news of Maelor’s brutal death finally breaks Helaena. Her subsequent death sparks rumors of Rhaenyra’s involvement and incites riots in King’s Landing.

At the same time, Martin already knew back in 2024 that Condal intended to keep Helaena’s fate the same even after cutting Maelor:

In the season three finale, events unfolded precisely as Martin described. After experiencing several visions, Helaena threw herself out of a window. Shortly afterward, the series showed Alicent heading toward King’s Landing as a swarm of blue butterflies took flight near her.

At that moment, the title of Martin’s post took on a literal meaning. In 2024, the author used butterflies as a metaphor for small changes capable of triggering a chain of severe plot consequences. Two years later, House of the Dragon literally finished that storyline with the appearance of butterflies on screen.

As The Hollywood Reporter previously reported, “Beware the Butterflies” was intended to be the first installment of a six-part series by Martin about the problems with House of the Dragon. The post was deleted after intervention from HBO, and the author never published the remaining five parts. Meanwhile, the warning about larger and “poisonous” butterflies concerned not only season three but also season four. What other changes Martin intended to criticize remains unknown.
