Chris Evans Discusses Playing Luke Cage in Avengers: Doomsday

The Russo brothers are preparing to push Steve Rogers to his absolute limits once again.

Chris Evans discussed the return of Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday during a panel appearance at Fan Expo Boston. According to the actor, the Russo brothers have prepared severe trials for his character once more:

“The Russo brothers love beating up Steve Rogers. What they love most is just beating the absolute crap out of him. In their view, what defines a hero is how many hits he can take and still get back up.”

This time, the trials will prove especially harsh, while also offering a deeper exploration of Steve’s character and beliefs:

“They constantly find new ways to kick his ass. But this time, everything was especially brutal. It is a very good exploration of his character and values.”

Evans also shared how Marvel concealed his return during production. Throughout the script, shooting documents, and even conversations on set, Steve Rogers was masked under the name of another superhero:

“In the script, my character was called Luke Cage in case of leaks. In the shooting schedules, I also went by that name. Even on set, people would say, ‘Luke Cage is heading out.’ Everything was kept under the strictest secrecy.”

Evans denied his involvement in the film for several months, even though major Hollywood outlets reported on his return in advance. Marvel Studios officially confirmed the appearance of Steve Rogers only in the first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday. The film will premiere on December 18, 2026.
