Rockstar Veteran Explains Why GTA IV Dropped Full NPC Life Simulation

Rockstar Games producer Leslie Benzies initially wanted Grand Theft Auto IV to feature a full-scale daily life simulation for its non-playable characters, but technical hurdles and design doubts cut the feature short.

Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij continues to reveal behind-the-scenes stories from the development of the Grand Theft Auto series. Recently, he recalled Benzies’ ambitions to give Liberty City’s NPCs distinct daily routines and persistent lives.

The concept required non-playable characters to follow authentic schedules. However, the Grand Theft Auto IV development team ran into severe technical difficulties while trying to build the system, and Vermeij believed players did not actually need that level of realism.

Speaking to Edge Magazine, Vermeij explained:

Leslie Benzies wanted everybody [in GTA IV] to have a life, a place where they lived, a schedule, and they’d drive to work every morning. We worked on it for a while, but it was just too problematic in the end. There were just too many bugs.

Vermeij pushed back against the full NPC life simulation idea because he felt it was unnecessary. In his view, players are comfortable with pedestrians feeling somewhat artificial:

I even think that psychologically, players are quite comfortable with pedestrians feeling a little bit fake and shallow. I don’t think realism is necessarily what you want in games.

Grand Theft Auto IV continues to draw player interest. While Rockstar Games prepares GTA VI, a tech enthusiast is developing an unofficial RTX remaster of the game to upgrade its visuals using modern rendering technology.
