SpaceBourne 2 Creator Discusses Failed Unreal Engine 5 Port and Future Plans

Developer Burak Dabak has decided to keep space RPG shooter SpaceBourne 2 on its original engine after an attempt to migrate to Unreal Engine 5 proved too risky.

The developer had not released an update for SpaceBourne 2 since spring and recently shared an explanation for the extended silence.

Over the past few months, Dabak and his team worked on several major technical improvements for the project. The most ambitious task was an effort to port SpaceBourne 2 from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5.

However, the transition was ultimately canceled due to the project’s current architecture and underlying technical roadblocks.

We spent a significant amount of time testing and working on this transition. However, due to the project’s current structure and a number of technical difficulties encountered along the way, we ultimately concluded that continuing the migration would introduce too much instability and pose excessive risks for future development.

Following that decision, Dabak chose to continue SpaceBourne 2 development on its existing technology stack so the team can concentrate directly on gameplay progress.

The development team has also expanded, which will help address bug fixes, system improvements, and upcoming content more efficiently. The studio’s current priority is a major patch focused on fixing bugs and resolving various issues reported by players.

The patch for SpaceBourne 2 is expected to arrive very soon. A content update is planned to follow afterward.
