Ridley Scott Calls “Canopus” His Best Film Since “The Martian”

Renowned British director Ridley Scott has declared that his forthcoming post-apocalyptic thriller, The Dog Stars, stands as the most impressive entry in his filmography since the 2015 hit The Martian.

“It explores the depth of human emotion: regardless of the circumstances, we need one another. If the world were to end, how would you persevere?”

Scott remarked, reflecting on his creative choice. The Martian, adapted from Andy Weir’s novel, followed a bio-engineer (portrayed by Matt Damon) struggling to survive in isolation on Mars while awaiting rescue. The film achieved significant commercial success with a $630 million global box office haul and garnered seven Academy Award nominations.

The Dog Stars is based on the novel by Peter Heller. The plot centers on a pilot (played by Jacob Elordi) navigating an Earth ravaged by a global pandemic. His life changes when he intercepts a mysterious radio transmission, prompting him to embark on a perilous journey in search of surviving pockets of civilization. The cast also features Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley, with the film slated for a U.S. theatrical release on August 28.

Interestingly, earlier in 2024, Scott had referred to his blockbuster sequel Gladiator II as “the best thing I’ve ever done.”
