Report: Sony Has Largely Stopped Creating New Franchises for PS5
Sony is facing a shortage of new gaming franchises on the PS5. Nearly six years after the console’s launch, the company has created only a few original intellectual properties.
The cancellation of PHYSINT and the transfer of Hideo Kojima’s spy game to a competitor have reignited discussions about the state of the PlayStation ecosystem. Players have tallied Sony’s results for the current generation and reached disappointing conclusions.
Aside from the critically acclaimed Returnal and Saros, the list of new original intellectual properties looks modest. Destruction AllStars and Concord both failed, leading the games to be pulled from digital storefronts or have their servers shut down. Marathon is also struggling to retain its audience.

The immediate future does not change this situation yet. The mysterious Intergalactic and the questionable Fairgame$ remain on the horizon. Players blame Sony’s leadership, arguing that the multi-year focus on live-service games has harmed the creativity of internal studios. In their view, instead of new single-player adventures, the PS5 generation has delivered a multitude of canceled or shut-down projects.
