Netflix has steadily expanded its slate of animated adaptations of videogame properties — from Tomb Raider to Splinter Cell — and the next project reportedly centers on Activision’s iconic Crash Bandicoot.

What’s on Netflix says the streamer is quietly developing an animated Crash Bandicoot series, with animation studio WildBrain attached. WildBrain has collaborated with Netflix before on shows such as Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego, and is also working on a Minecraft animated series for the platform.

At present, concrete details are limited. It’s unclear whether the show would adapt an existing game storyline or follow an original narrative built around Crash and his world.

Crash Bandicoot first appeared in Naughty Dog’s 1996 platformer, released as a PlayStation exclusive before the franchise expanded to other platforms. After several entries and a long hiatus following 2008’s Crash: Mind Over Mutant, the series was revived by the 2017 remaster collection Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which sparked renewed interest in the character.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time arrived in 2020 to generally positive reviews, though reports suggested sales fell short of Activision’s expectations and a planned sequel, commonly referred to as Crash 5, was canceled. Since then the franchise’s new releases have included mobile titles and the multiplayer action game Crash Team Rumble.

Crash has already made the jump to animation in guest appearances on Netflix’s Skylanders Academy. If a standalone Crash Bandicoot series moves forward at Netflix, it would join a growing roster of videogame adaptations in development at the streamer, including series based on Horizon and Assassin’s Creed.
