Academy Award-winning director Christopher Nolan remains optimistic about the future of cinema and the enduring relevance of the theatrical experience.
According to the visionary filmmaker, the significant box-office success of horror titles such as Curry Barker’s Obsession and Kane Parsons’ The Backrooms serves as compelling evidence that the industry is far from stagnant.
“We are seeing brilliant young filmmakers carving out their own unique spaces and driving the medium forward. This is precisely why I have never subscribed to the notion that the attention spans of younger audiences are diminishing… These films are enigmatic and deeply thought-provoking. To my eye, certain sequences in The Backrooms evoke the spirit of David Lynch. Younger viewers are clearly captivated by them,”
— Nolan remarked in an interview with The Telegraph.
A24’s The Backrooms, adapted from the viral creepypasta and hit web series, has grossed $360 million globally. Meanwhile, Focus Features’ Obsession—produced on a lean $750,000 budget—has shattered expectations with a $406 million haul. These films have also previously garnered high praise from Steven Spielberg.
Nolan is set to debut his own three-hour epic, Odyssey, in theaters next week on July 15.
