Microsoft is altering its approach to diversity initiatives: the company has discontinued its annual inclusivity report and removed “diversity and inclusion” from the primary criteria used in internal employee evaluations.
Microsoft’s head of communications, Frank Shaw, told The Verge:
We’ve shifted to more dynamic, accessible formats — stories, videos, and other content that demonstrate inclusion in practice. Our mission and commitment to our culture and values remain constant: to enable every person and organization to achieve more.
Microsoft has revised its internal review framework: the “top priorities” items for safety and diversity have been removed. Employees are no longer required to report on actions they took to promote diversity within the company.
Reviews now focus solely on goals achieved, the methods used to reach them, obstacles encountered, and plans moving forward — without explicitly referencing diversity. In HR documents reviewed by The Verge, the term “diversity” is absent, with only “inclusion” being mentioned. Beginning of form
