Final Fantasy XIV’s Yoshi-P Says Mobile RPGs Inspired Lifting Glamour Restrictions: “You don’t see the same fashion limits in those games”

With mobile RPGs on the rise and the traditional MMO audience shrinking, Yoshi‑P noted that players coming from those other games often ask why FF14 restricts appearances: “If you grew up playing these other types of games, then started playing FF14, you would think ‘Why are there restrictions on how my gear looks?’” He suggested there are plenty of players who feel that way.

Although Yoshi‑P still says he personally believes some gear should be tied to its intended classes and jobs, he no longer wants to impose that principle on the playerbase. “When I’m a gamer I can make my own rules, but it isn’t my place to force those ideas on others,” he explained, adding that he didn’t want to deny roleplayers the chance to be more fashionable.

His change of heart surprised even the development team: when he announced the shift they reportedly replied, “Is that really okay?” — some team members had assumed Yoshi‑P’s position on equipment appearance was final.

Yoshi‑P has described this period as “time to go back to school,” saying the team is refocusing as it prepares the next expansion and moves on from the mixed reception of the Dawntrail chapter.
