The horror film Evil Dead: Burn narrowly avoided the dreaded NC-17 rating, a classification rarely assigned to mainstream Hollywood productions.
To bypass such restrictive measures, director Sébastien Vaniček was compelled to trim some of the more visceral gore and violence from a specific sequence.
There was a sequence that I had to trim down slightly. It’s still in the final cut. It remains intense and quite brutal,
Vaniček remarked during an interview with SlashFilm, though he opted not to specify exactly which scene was impacted.
The most recent major film to carry an NC-17 rating was the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde. Released on Netflix in 2022, the project earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for its star, Ana de Armas.
Burn marks the sixth installment in the storied Evil Dead franchise, which was launched by Sam Raimi in the 1980s. The plot follows Alice (Souheila Yacoub) as she attends her husband’s funeral. The somber family gathering descends into a nightmare when demonic entities from the underworld possess the attendees, forcing Alice into a desperate struggle for survival.
Critics have met Burn with favorable reviews, currently holding a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is slated for a Russian theatrical release on July 16.
