Doom creator’s canceled game scaled down but will feel as fresh to players as Elden Ring

DOOM

Doom co-creator and id Software co-founder John Romero has revealed that a previously canceled project is back in development — not as a straight revival, but reimagined into a new game that borrows elements from the original concept.

Earlier this year, Microsoft’s wide-ranging round of layoffs and studio changes led to the cancellation of several high-profile Xbox projects, including Rare’s Everwild, the Perfect Dark reboot, and an unannounced MMO from ZeniMax Online Studios. The fallout also affected third-party developers: Romero Games announced it had lost funding for “an all-new FPS with an original, new IP,” a decision former staff attributed to Microsoft.
