Microsoft Couldn’t Kill John Romero’s Shooter — Developers Secure Funding for Their Project

That said, the game has been scaled down from its original ambitions.

Game designer John Romero (co-creator of Doom and Quake) announced that his new project — which Microsoft halted funding for in early 2025 amid widespread layoffs — has officially been rescued and is back in development. Romero revealed this at the Salón del Videojuego de Madrid.

According to Romero, the studio had to make concessions and reduce the project’s scope. The design has been thoroughly reworked from the version created under Microsoft’s oversight, but the 110-person team is not starting from scratch — many elements from the earlier build have been carried over into the new edition.

It’s a shooter, but what you’ll be doing in it will feel as fresh to players as experiencing Elden Ring did.
