Gears of War: E-Day Reportedly Planned as Start of a New Trilogy, Rumors Say
Xbox expects to grow the Gears of War series across several games and reuse earlier work, despite debate over the cost of Gears of War: E-Day and changes to its staff.
Gears of War: E-Day is planned as the start of a trilogy. At the same time, the departure of the game’s narrative director and uncertainty over its budget could affect the future of the series.
The comments came from blogger Matty Slop, also known as MrMattyPlays. He suggested that the exit of the head of the story team could complicate work on the sequels.
Earlier reports said Gears of War: E-Day cost more than $500 million to develop. However, Windows Central Gaming staffer Mikey J. Raymond says that figure covers a studio budget spread across several projects.
According to Alinea Analytics estimates, the game brought in about $37 million during its launch period and sold about 230,000 copies on Xbox and Steam. The number of players reached 1.7 million, and most of them played the shooter through Game Pass.
Despite the financial questions, Matty doubts that Xbox will abandon the franchise, given the company’s plans to expand it beyond games. Windows Central journalist Jez Corden also suggested that part of the budget went toward creating materials for future installments. The Coalition will be able to reuse finished assets and code, spreading the costs across several games.
