Shadow of the Colossus director hails it as a “masterpiece”.

Renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, the creator of Pan’s Labyrinth and the recent Frankenstein, revealed himself to be an avid gamer. In a new episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast he was asked about the greatest game of all time, and del Toro promptly singled out the modern entries in Santa Monica Studio’s God of War series.

He described God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök as highly cinematic and technically impressive, likening them to big‑budget films.

Del Toro separately highlighted the confrontation between Kratos and Baldur, comparing the sequence to a brawl straight out of the TV series Peaky Blinders.

In addition to God of War, del Toro mentioned BioShock, Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid, Left 4 Dead, Red Dead Redemption, and Shadow of the Colossus — the latter of which he praised as a “masterpiece”.
