Doctor Who spin-off “War Between Land and Sea” to premiere in December
Despite lingering uncertainty around the main series, Doctor Who fans won’t be left without New Year’s programming.
The BBC has confirmed that the long-awaited Doctor Who spinoff — The War Between the Land and the Sea — is scheduled to premiere in December 2025.
The story follows humanity, including the UNIT organization, as it faces an ancient species of Sea Devils risen from the depths. These creatures first appeared in the classic Doctor Who in 1972 and returned half a century later in the 2022 special “Legend of the Sea Devils,” which featured Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
The cast includes Russell Tovey (Barnkly) and Gugu Mbatha‑Raw (Salt), alongside familiar faces from the main series: Jemma Redgrave (Kate Stewart), Ruth Madeley (Shirley Bingham) and Alexander Dreymon (Christopher Ibrahim).
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies — who serves as writer and executive producer on the project — described The War Between the Land and the Sea as “a huge, cinematic Christmas gift,” promising heroes, monsters, large-scale battles and romance teetering on the edge of disaster.
An exact premiere date has not yet been revealed, but Davies’ remarks set the mood and suggest the spinoff could function as a kind of oversized Christmas special.
