Discord is introducing a feature that lets players buy skins and other cosmetic items from selected games directly within their servers in the app.
The app is becoming a marketplace for in-game cosmetics. The rollout will begin with Marvel Rivals, where users will be able to purchase skins and send them as gifts to friends.
Discord’s Chief Technology Officer Stan Vishnevskiy commented:
We all have friends who play games we don’t, and they’re drawn to items that don’t always appeal to us. This creates a way for developers to reach the friends of potential players.
In August, Discord saw a change in leadership: Jason Citron stepped down and was succeeded by Humam Sakhnini, the former president and CFO of King. The company has since introduced interactive ads and a virtual currency called Orbs, and Discord will take a cut from each sale made through the platform.
