In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, director Christopher Nolan shed light on the primary creative influence behind the monstrous entities featured in his latest epic, “The Odyssey.”
Nolan revealed that he looked to the visionary work of Guillermo del Toro—the Academy Award-winning mastermind behind “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy,” “The Shape of Water,” and “Frankenstein”—as a guiding benchmark.
“Guillermo del Toro was a massive inspiration. He taught me that a monster is not merely a beast. You must approach them with the same depth and nuance you would afford any other character,”
Nolan admitted. “The Odyssey” will feature several iconic mythological creatures, including the six-headed Scylla and the cyclops Polyphemus. In crafting the latter, Nolan and his creative team drew visual inspiration from Francisco Goya’s haunting masterpiece, “Saturn Devouring His Son.”
“The Odyssey,” a sweeping adaptation of Homer’s classic epic poem, is set for worldwide release on July 15. The star-studded cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, and others.
