“After thorough internal discussion, we have decided not to pursue a Steam release,” the team added.
This decision drew attention following Valve’s removal of arthouse horror title Horses from Steam, though the exact nature of BrownDust2’s policy conflict has not been disclosed. By contrast, Horses’ developer publicly detailed the issues behind their removal.
The developers note that promotional material for BrownDust2 must be heavily censored to meet YouTube guidelines due to its explicit content. Given the presence of adult content elsewhere on Steam, however, it’s unclear whether that fact alone prompted Valve’s concerns or if there were more specific objections. The outlet reports it has contacted Neowiz seeking clarification.
The BrownDust2 team said they explored several options but ultimately determined that the changes required to satisfy Steam’s policies would undermine the game’s central vision and overall quality.
The language of the statement implies the issue relates to the title’s creative direction and content, which make the game’s themes and target audience abundantly clear. Nevertheless, a review of Steam’s new-and-trending feed raises questions about what specific elements could be considered unacceptable.
With Steam off the table, the developers say they are exploring “alternative PC platforms that can provide a better environment for BrownDust2.” Meanwhile, rewards intended to commemorate the Steam launch will still be distributed following a December 16 update.
