Actor Adam Driver spoke about an unrealized Star Wars spinoff that would have continued the story of Kylo Ren (Ben Solo).
The project went by the working title “The Hunt for Ben Solo.” The initial draft was put forward by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven), who had planned to direct, while the screenplay was written by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion).
Although Lucasfilm showed enthusiasm, the film never came to fruition.
“I was always interested in appearing in another Star Wars film. Talks about filming it began in 2021. […] I liked the character and enjoyed playing him. We presented the script to Lucasfilm — they liked the idea. They fully understood our perspective and why we wanted to make it. We showed the screenplay to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman (Disney executives — ed.), but they said ‘no.’ They couldn’t reconcile how Ben Solo could have survived. And that was the end of it,” Driver told the Associated Press.
Soderbergh also spoke warmly of the concept behind The Hunt:
“I enjoyed imagining the film. It’s a pity fans won’t get to see it,” he commented.
Driver portrayed Ben Solo in the most recent Star Wars trilogy (2015–2019). A family drama by Jim Jarmusch titled “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother,” featuring Driver, is slated for release in Russia on January 1.
