Netflix Sued Over Stolen Nicolas Cage Film

Streaming titan Netflix is embroiled in a legal battle after Swiss producer Simon Afram filed a lawsuit against the platform, alleging the theft of his war thriller, Fortitude.

The project features Academy Award winners Nicolas Cage and Ben Kingsley in lead roles. According to Afram, Netflix lost a hard drive containing a copy of the film and went silent on his inquiries, only to later claim that the asset had been stolen.

Netflix has responded to the litigation by stating they are taking all necessary steps to resolve the matter. Afram asserts he dedicated seven years and $45 million to the production and is now seeking $105 million in damages.

This is not the first legal hurdle for the film; in 2023, Afram sued executive producer Martin Scorsese. The producer alleged that Scorsese pocketed a $500,000 fee without contributing to the project’s promotion. Scorsese’s legal team dismissed the claims, characterizing Afram as an inexperienced newcomer with unrealistic expectations of the Hollywood industry. The parties eventually reached a settlement in 2025.

Fortitude was first announced in 2025, with Simon West (Con Air) serving as director and principal photography wrapping that autumn. The film depicts a pivotal Allied deception operation against Nazi Germany during World War II. Nicolas Cage stars as Dusko Popov, a legendary Serbian double agent. The supporting cast includes Matthew Goode, Ron Perlman, Ed Skrein, Alice Eve, and Michael Sheen.
