Rumor: “Alien: Romulus” may not get a sequel

20th Century Studios has reportedly put development of a sequel to Alien: Romulus on hold, according to information from World of Reel.

Following director Fede Álvarez’s departure from the project, the studio has struggled to secure a successor. Negotiations with potential director Sébastien Vaniček, known for Evil Dead Rise, have failed to yield any tangible results.

Insiders suggest that the heavy-handed involvement of original Alien creator Ridley Scott has complicated the production. Reports indicate that Álvarez had intended to reintroduce the android David—portrayed by Michael Fassbender in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant—as a primary antagonist. Although Fassbender was reportedly close to signing on, Scott allegedly blocked the inclusion of the character, vetoing his return.

Meanwhile, Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are expected to shift their focus to other ventures; Spaeny is reportedly eyeing the role of Rogue in the upcoming X-Men films, while Jonsson has been tapped to headline Black Panther 3. Additionally, screenwriter Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) is currently working on a separate project within the Alien franchise.

Alien: Romulus debuted in the summer of 2024, grossing $350 million at the global box office. Set between the events of the original Alien and its sequel Aliens, the film followed a group of scavengers who stumble upon a derelict space station, only to face a terrifying encounter with lethal xenomorphs. The film received generally favorable reviews, maintaining an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
