Warner Bros. in talks for possible “Barbie” sequel

Warner Bros. is currently engaged in negotiations with the creative team behind the smash-hit comedy “Barbie” to discuss the possibility of a follow-up film, according to reports from The New York Times.

Insiders suggest that director Greta Gerwig, along with lead stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, have already met with Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav. However, Zaslav reportedly found their initial salary demands for a sequel to be excessively high. Discussions are expected to continue through December, at which point the rights to the “Barbie” franchise are set to revert to Mattel.

“Barbie” debuted in the summer of 2023, becoming a global box-office phenomenon that grossed $1.4 billion. The film also earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” The narrative followed the iconic doll as she ventured from her colorful home into the complexities of the real world.

Following the film’s overwhelming success, Gerwig hinted at the possibility of a spin-off centered on Ken (Gosling). Furthermore, in 2024, Warner Bros. executive Pam Abdy confirmed the studio’s strong interest in developing a sequel.
