Mahershala Ali Confirms Blade Cancellation

Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) has confirmed that he will no longer be starring in Marvel Studios’ standalone “Blade” film.

“Not with me. No offense to them. I’ve been doing this [acting] for over 30 years now, and I’ve learned one thing: what’s meant for you is yours, and what isn’t, simply isn’t. For whatever reason, this project wasn’t meant for me. If they wanted to make it, we would have. So, I have to move forward, and that’s what I’ve done… I’m doing just fine. Again, they had a billion-dollar contract with me; if they had truly wanted to make the movie, it would have been made. But it’s not happening,”

— Ali revealed in a recent interview with GQ.

The reboot of “Blade” was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in the summer of 2019. Since then, the production has been plagued by multiple director departures, eventually leading Marvel to pull the film from its release schedule indefinitely. Although Ali expressed a willingness to return to the vampire hunter role as recently as 2025, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige admitted in July 2026 that he regrets the missed opportunity:

“I feel like a total failure that we couldn’t make it work with Mahershala.”

The most iconic screen portrayal of the character remains the New Line Cinema trilogy (1998–2004), starring Wesley Snipes, who recently reprised the role for a cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

This September, Ali is set to headline the new thriller “Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother.” The film is directed by Bassam Tariq, who was originally attached to direct “Blade” before exiting the project due to creative differences with Marvel.
