Zack Snyder shared the first plot details for his next movie. It is a remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 classic Escape from New York, and Snake Plissken fans should expect a faithful adaptation.

During an interview with the YouTube channel Happy Sad Confused, Zack Snyder explained his vision. He stated that the movie will be set in 1997 from the perspective of 1981. The fictional war between the United States police force and criminal elements takes place on July 9, 1981, which is the exact release date of the original movie. After that opening period, the story follows the original plot closely.

Zack Snyder’s Escape from New York remake will be faithful to the original

The remake will adhere to the original film down to representing its version of 1997 through a 1981 lens, complete with retrofuturistic technology and shuriken. Zack Snyder described the original movie as the perfect combination of kitsch and camp, which drives his love for the property.

Zack Snyder confirmed he is still casting the role of Snake Plissken. Host Josh Horowitz mentioned that Jeffrey Dean Morgan from The Walking Dead expressed interest in the part, and Zack Snyder acknowledged that conversation. When asked if the character will wear his iconic eyepatch, Zack Snyder replied that he better have one or he will walk out.

What is Escape from New York about?

Escape from New York is a sci-fi action thriller following Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, who is a former special forces operative turned criminal. The film is set in a dystopian United States where a 400 percent increase in crime leads the government to convert Manhattan into a maximum-security prison. Anti-government insurgents hijack Air Force One and take the president hostage, forcing Snake Plissken to retrieve the commander in chief within 24 hours to secure a full pardon.

The original movie is a cult classic that inspired elements of the Metal Gear video game series. Solid Snake borrows his bandana, gruff voice, and name directly from Snake Plissken.

Zack Snyder is coming off a difficult reception for his previous project. His movie The Last Photograph debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, and critics gave it poor reviews. The film currently holds a 20 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One viewer described it as grotesque, shameless, and an utter disgrace from start to finish. Fans of the director hope his upcoming Escape from New York reboot achieves a better reception.
