You Might Be on YouTube: Platform Launches Deepfake Protection System

YouTube is introducing a tool to combat deepfakes. The feature is currently limited to a small group of users but will be rolled out to everyone beginning January 2026.

To complete verification, users must record a short selfie video and provide an identity document via YouTube Studio. Once submitted, the system scans the platform for videos that might contain the user’s likeness.

Creators will receive a list of matched videos and can request removal directly from their dashboard. In this way, YouTube aims to give people greater control over how their appearance is used.

The company cautions that the tool is not perfect. Mistakes can occur—authentic videos may be incorrectly labeled as deepfakes, and some manipulated clips might be missed. Additionally, removal is not guaranteed when content does not violate the platform’s policies.
