Xbox Helps Create Gameplay for Hideo Kojima’s Horror OD

Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show 2025, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, outlined Xbox’s role in the project. Teams from Xbox are contributing more than technical support — they’re working directly with Kojima Productions on gameplay design to help make the horror experience genuinely distinctive and chilling.

Spencer said the studio’s tenth-anniversary trailer left a strong impression and “made him very happy.” OD is an ambitious collaboration between the Japanese auteur and Microsoft. The title is being built in Unreal Engine 5, a platform where Xbox has substantial expertise, and Microsoft is offering direct support to ensure the engine is used to its fullest. The partnership also reaches creative territory, aiming to enhance the game’s interactivity and the psychological tension that define Kojima’s work.

Development has not been without setbacks: the actors’ strike in 2023 delayed filming and complicated schedule planning. “We’re working hard, but a specific release date hasn’t been set,” Spencer noted.
