Three Fields Entertainment, the independent studio founded by former Criterion Games leads Fiona Sperry and Alex Ward, has reached out to its community for financial backing via Patreon in a desperate bid to remain operational.
Last week, Sperry disclosed on LinkedIn that the studio’s entire staff had been issued redundancy notices as the company faces a critical financial turning point.
“The reality we are currently navigating is incredibly harsh. As an indie studio, we don’t expect to see any significant revenue from game sales in the immediate future. We have been forced to self-fund the majority of this year’s operations, along with all of our post-release content.”
Sperry emphasized that without the safety net of a traditional publisher, the studio cannot sustain itself in its current form:
“Making the decision to issue these notices was an agonizingly difficult step for us to take.”
A statement on the studio’s Patreon page further explains their situation:
“Without your direct assistance, we simply cannot keep moving forward. Patreon provides us with the resources to deliver updates more frequently, test out innovative ideas, and generate more content. It also allows us to build a much closer relationship with our player base.”
Despite these challenges, Sperry assured fans that a major update featuring cross-play functionality is still on track for release before the Christmas holidays.
