WoW: Midnight Composer is Glad Blizzard Isn’t Using Generative AI
Lio Kaliski, the composer behind World of Warcraft: Midnight, considers himself fortunate that Blizzard Entertainment has eschewed generative AI. During a recent interview, he remarked that the creative team thrives on “simply composing what they find compelling,” enjoying the freedom of a human-led process.
According to Kaliski, Blizzard remains steadfast in its commitment to traditional craftsmanship, consciously opting to avoid reliance on AI tools in their development cycle.
The integration of generative AI has become a flashpoint for controversy across the gaming landscape, from the AI-synthesized dialogue in Arc Raiders to the scrutinized textures in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The shift toward automation has also led to significant labor shifts; Square Enix recently dismissed over 100 employees following a pledge to automate 70% of their testing procedures. Meanwhile, the publishers of PUBG and Subnautica 2 have signaled a complete strategic overhaul, rebranding as AI-centric enterprises.
