‘Brütal Legend’ Sequel Not in Development at Double Fine

Following Double Fine Productions’ return to independent status, fans hoping for an immediate revival of Brütal Legend will need to temper their expectations. Studio founder Tim Schafer has confirmed that a sequel is not currently in development, as the team is intentionally shifting its focus toward smaller-scale, unconventional projects for the foreseeable future.

During an appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Schafer directly addressed viewer inquiries regarding the status of Brütal Legend 2. While clarifying that the project is not in production, he maintained an optimistic outlook on revisiting the heavy-metal fantasy universe down the road.

“We’re not working on that now,” Schafer stated. “But maybe someday. I mean, there’s a lot there to work with. But right now, we’re going to make a whole bunch of crazy little weird things.”

Addressing audience concerns about how a potential sequel might handle the loss of iconic heavy metal figures who appeared in the 2009 original—such as Lemmy Kilmister and Ozzy Osbourne—Schafer expressed confidence that the metal genre has plenty of room for both legacy acts and emerging talent.

“Making Brütal Legend, there’s all that stuff I loved in high school, and then making the game I found out a whole bunch of other bands and stuff that I never heard of,” Schafer reflected. “We still have Rob Halford with us and Lita Ford, but we did lose Ozzy and Lemmy. I really love that you can play Brütal Legend and see this really beautiful representation of those guys… It’s like this little time capsule of these legends in their prime. So there’s just always new great people we could have in the game.”

Rather than jumping straight into major sequels, Double Fine is currently directing its energy toward community-driven and experimental initiatives. These include upcoming developments for Kiln alongside the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 game jam, which aims to select one prototype for a full commercial release—potentially marking the studio’s inaugural project under its renewed independence.

The studio’s creative pivot comes on the heels of its separation from Xbox Game Studios, which originally acquired Double Fine in 2019 before divesting the team as part of a broader corporate restructuring. Despite subsequent staff reductions, Double Fine successfully retained full ownership of its intellectual property catalog.

While a direct sequel remains on the back burner, the original Brütal Legend remains widely accessible to modern audiences via PC, Xbox backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox Game Pass library.
