Studio Ghibli Has Not Yet Decided on Its Next Feature Film
Studio Ghibli has not yet settled on its next feature film and is in no rush to greenlight a new production, according to Toho CEO Hiroyasu Matsuoka in an interview with Bloomberg.
Toho distributes Ghibli movies and is waiting for the animation studio to determine its future direction. Matsuoka noted that the companies continually discuss potential projects, though predicting which concepts will actually move into production remains almost impossible.
“We discuss a lot of projects on a completely informal level. Sometimes one of them comes to life very quickly. In other cases, we say, ‘Great idea, maybe we will come back to it next time,’ and that never happens. Everything is completely unpredictable.”

Studio Ghibli’s latest feature film was The Boy and the Heron, which premiered in Japan in July 2023. Hayao Miyazaki’s movie earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but the studio has remained silent regarding its next feature endeavor.
Even so, the 85-year-old Miyazaki continues to actively develop new ideas. Producer Toshio Suzuki confirmed this in March 2026, though the studio is not yet ready to disclose what the director is creating.
