Geoff Keighley Explains Who Pays for Gamescom Showcases, Says Event Is Not Just for the Rich
Gamescom Opening Night Live does not charge every publisher for a spot in its showcase, according to host Geoff Keighley. Some titles are selected free of charge based entirely on editorial merit.
Keighley stated that the main requirement for an editorial pick is the ability to deliver something surprising to viewers. That can include a brand-new trailer, a major announcement, or any significant reveal capable of making an impact, regardless of whether it comes from a major studio or a small indie development team.

Other slots remain paid commercial placements. Past reports indicated that a 60-second trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live could cost around $120,000. Rates run higher at The Game Awards, where a presentation spanning several minutes can reach $1 million.
Keighley noted that titles scheduled to launch just weeks after the broadcast often feel like standard marketing. Announcements and unexpected materials carry higher editorial value for the production team.
Games announced for Opening Night Live 2026 include Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, and a new DLC for The Witcher 3.
