PS5 Sales No Longer Sony’s Top Priority as President Outlines New Strategy
Sony no longer intends to aggressively drive PlayStation 5 hardware sales as component costs rise and the console enters the second half of its lifecycle, according to Sony President Hiroki Totoki.
With the PS5 having sold more than 95 million units, Sony acknowledged that it is not trying to boost console volume at all costs.
Instead, the company wants to focus on retaining and engaging players who are already within the PlayStation ecosystem.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Totoki discussed rising component expenses and broader tech industry challenges. He noted that the memory market crunch began at an opportune moment for the PS5.
“This is a fortunate coincidence. We are already in the second half of the console’s lifecycle, so we do not need to aggressively sell the PS5 right now.”
Sony plans to generate more revenue from its established user base by expanding services and audience monetization. Totoki also pointed to 125 million monthly active PlayStation users, a figure that likely encompasses all active players rather than PlayStation Plus subscribers alone.
Sony’s strategy continues to shift toward subscriptions, digital game sales, microtransactions, and online services. Analysts observe that while the current market dynamics favor the PS5, the PS6 could face severe headwinds if hardware component prices stay elevated.
