Masters of the Universe Finds Global Streaming Success on Prime Video
Hollywood continues to turn familiar childhood properties into major feature films. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became the first release of 2026 to cross $1 billion worldwide, following the massive wave started by Barbie. Studios show few signs of slowing down. John Cena stars in Matchbox: The Movie later this year, while upcoming schedules feature The Legend of Zelda, a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant. Even Dungeons & Dragons, a cornerstone of 1980s tabletop gaming, has enjoyed a broad resurgence.
Familiar names do not guarantee theatrical profits. Director Travis Knight delivered a $175 million live-action revival of He-Man with Masters of the Universe, but the movie struggled to attract large crowds during its summer run in theaters. The project found a second life once it arrived on digital streaming. According to FlixPatrol, the film climbed toward the top of Prime Video’s global movie charts.
What is Masters of the Universe about?
Masters of the Universe delivers a modernized blockbuster approach to the original franchise lore. Nicholas Galitzine plays Prince Adam, who escapes Eternia as a child after Jared Leto’s Skeletor conquers the kingdom. Adam spends years living on Earth, completely separated from his heritage. When he recovers the Sword of Power, Adam travels back to Eternia as He-Man to challenge Skeletor and reclaim his home.

The film earned solid reactions from audiences and critics. The adaptation holds a 67% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 86% audience score. Polygon’s review described the production as a “nearly perfect sci-fi fantasy epic” while highlighting its colorful, maximalist visual style. More than 40 years after the brand originated, Eternia still commands attention.
Will there be a Masters of the Universe 2?
A sequel seems doubtful based on box office earnings alone. Strong streaming viewership offers some hope for the franchise. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that viewers logged 1.17 billion minutes watching the movie during its opening week on Prime Video. Amazon previously invested heavily in large-scale fantasy worlds like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, leaving open the possibility of returning to Eternia down the road.

Director Travis Knight has moved on to his next feature, the animated stop-motion film Wildwood. Viewers interested in future franchise plans can read more about how the director designed the post-credits scene.
