Amazon has officially halted development on New World. Four years after its release, the game once touted as a “World of Warcraft killer” will no longer receive updates or expansions.
The company announced the decision on the fourth anniversary of New World’s PC launch. In an official statement, they described the period as “an incredible time built together with a devoted player community,” but said that after “four years of steady updates and a console launch” the team has reached a point where continuing development is not viable.
Season 10 and the “Night Haven” update served as the final major releases for both PC and consoles. As a token of appreciation to the community, both “Night Haven” and “Rise of the Angry Earth” have been made free for all PC players.
Servers will remain active through the end of 2026 so players can continue their adventures on Aeternum. New World: Aeternum will also be available to download via PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium.
The developers thanked players, calling the shared experience “an unforgettable journey” and expressing gratitude for years of support and enthusiasm. With this announcement, Amazon closes the chapter on a major MMO that may not have transformed the genre but has left a lasting imprint on the live-service game landscape.
